As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, to celebrate this festive occasion, our LaserMaster will create a dragon boat printmaking piece to add color to your Dragon Boat Festival!

Today, our LaserMaster will continue to share with you the introductory course of “LaserMaker: Creating with Lasers” – the production method of “Dragon Boat Printmaking”.

I. Introduction

Printmaking is the art of creating images by cutting or etching into a plate made of wood, stone, linoleum, copper, zinc, or other materials, and then printing from that plate. In this issue, we will use “laser cutting” instead of traditional “hand carving” to create printmaking, with the dragon boat, an element of the Dragon Boat Festival, as the theme. Our LaserMaster presents to you the artwork, “Dragon Boat Printmaking”!

II. Work Analysis

Printmaking often involves layering, with different colors and textures represented through various layers. As such, we’ve divided the dragon boat printmaking into five separate plates, each representing a different color.

IV. Laser Modeling

1. Shape Creation

(1) Enter the keyword “dragon boat painting” on Baidu Baike, select a picture you like and save it. Click “File” in the “Functional Area” at the top, then click “Open” and double-click to open the saved dragon boat image. As shown in the figure below:

(2) Left-click on the image, click to extract the outline, delete any unnecessary lines and the background, and appropriately add some strokes to obtain the dragon boat line drawing, as shown in the figure below:

(3) From the “Drawing Toolbox” on the left, select the “Horizontal Mirror” tool and mirror the dragon boat drawing once, as shown in the figure below:

Tips: Note that during the printing process, a mirror image will occur, resulting in a mirror image of the original. If you first apply a mirror effect during the design and drafting process, the printed result will be the original image.

(4) Divide the dragon boat drawing into different layers based on different colors, resulting in a total of five layers:

(6) From the “Drawing Toolbox” on the left, select the “Rectangle” and “Ellipse” tools to draw a frame for mounting the “Dragon Boat Print” and a dust cover for the frame, as shown in the figure below:

Tips: The four circles on the left side of the frame are used to place rivets to secure the frame and dust cover.

2. Process Settings

(1) Select the “Dust Cover”, and with the mouse, click on the layer panel on the lower left to change the layer color to red, as shown in the figure below:

(2) Double-click on the red layer with the left mouse button and set the material, thickness, and process to acrylic, 3mm, and cutting, respectively. Double-click on each remaining layer and set the material, thickness, and process to basswood, 3mm, and cutting, respectively, as shown in the figure below:
